JAMES SMITH BEGAN PLAYING FASTPITCH SOFTBALL IN 1932 AT
THE AGE OF 13. IN 1934, HE STARTED THE WINCHESTER
CARDINALS. HE WAS AN OUTSTANDING PITCHER/CATCHER
DURING HIS PLAYING CAREER THAT ENDED IN 1980, AFTER 48
YEARS, AND CONTINUES TODAY TO BE THE MANAGER, A
POSITION HE HAS HELD FOR 56 YEARS.
IN 1976, HIS TEAM WAS THE KENTUCKY STATE RUNNER-UP AND
WAS THE STATE CHAMPION IN 1986. MANY OF MR. SMITH'S
PLAYERS HAVE GONE ON TO PLAY ON OTHER CHAMPIONSHIP
TEAMS AND ALL HOLD THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF RESPECT FOR
HIM. THE WINCHESTER COMMUNITY IS VERY FOND OF JAMES
SMITH AS EVIDENCED BY THE DEDICATION OF MASSEY PARK TO
HIM IN 1975.
